The history of the Tanguy Tower

An emblematic monument of Brest, the Tanguy Tower has been an essential part of Breton heritage for 700 years.

Built on the rock in the 14th century, the watchtower stands proudly on the banks of the Penfeld, facing Brest Castle.

There you can discover a series of dioramas, models of historical scenes that reconstruct the unique history of Brest.

Are you ready to go back in time?

Its evolution over the centuries

Built on medieval foundations, the Tower is said to have been built during the War of Succession of Brittany in the 14th century.

It takes its name from the first name Tanguy given to several members of the Quilbignon family, whose coat of arms adorns the door.

Formerly a court, then inhabited by several families, then a medical practice, it has been transformed over the years.

At the time of the Liberation, it was burned down before being rebuilt and bought by the city of Brest, which turned it into a museum.

The Tanguy Tower today

Completely refurbished on 3 floors, the monument now houses an impressive scenography that traces the history of the city before the Second World War.

The dioramas designed by Brest artist Jim Sévellec tell the great moments in the history of the city of Ponant, such as the arrival of Napoleon or scenes of daily life in the streets of Old Brest.

The visit is fun and accessible to all thanks to an audio guide that will reveal all the secrets of the place.

Don't miss climbing to the 3rd floor to enjoy an exceptional 360° panorama of the city and the harbor.
