Visit the Finistériens memorial - Fort Montbarey

During your stay in Brest, it is impossible to miss this fortified structure from the 18th century.

Requisitioned by the Germans during the Second World War, Fort Montbarey now houses a memorial dedicated to the 10,000 people from Finistère who died for France and its allies.

This place full of history is to be discovered with family or friends!


The incredible history of Fort Montbarey


Formerly built to protect Brest and its arsenal from English forces, the fort became a logistics barracks for the Germans during the Second World War.

Later, converted into a labor camp, it housed Spanish Republicans transformed into forced laborers.

Finally, during the Cold War, Montbarey served as an anti-aircraft defense post for western France before being converted into a museum in 1984 thanks to passionate volunteers.

At the heart of the resistance networks of Finistère


200 years of history, memories and objects are gathered in this tribute museum.

You will discover many moving testimonies and period photos as well as documents from resistance fighters and soldiers.

A film dedicated to Brest during the war is also shown.


A rich collection of vehicles from the Second World War


Among the American vehicles and anti-aircraft defense batteries that took part in the Normandy landings, you can see a "death wagon". These trains were used for deportation during the Second World War.

An English Churchill tank is also visible in the courtyard.
